Have 1986 Toyota 4Runner 4x4. It had been overheating a little so I've been checking radiator & adding water if it needed it. Did not see any leaking underneath truck. This morning when I started it, there was a loud "Chunk" sound; I immediately turned it off. I restarted it and it sounded fine and I made a short errand. Now back at home, it will start, but there is water on my oil dipstick. I had remanufactured engine put in it last September and had no problems until this morning. Feedback appreciated.

It is either a head gasket or the head is cracked. More than likely it is the gasket. If you have been adding cold water when the engine is hot....then you may be searching for a head. Hot metal and cold water do not mix and cracks will result. Good luck !

I agree, at least a bad head gasket. You can have the cooling system pressurized in a shop and then look for coolant on the spark plugs as you pull them out. That's a sure diagnosis.

You must be careful here, because if the head gasket is dripping water into the cylinders, and if enough water gets into the cylinders overnight, you'll start the car one day and bend all of your connecting rods (water does not compress). This is called "hydraulic lock" and you may already have experienced a touch of it.

So do a pressure test. No guessing allowed.

Has the water mixed with the oil to form a substance that looks like chocolate milk? If so then a head gasket has blown or leaked. Hope the rebuilt engine had a warranty.

I had a problem like this one once.
My son took my f-100 to the car wash and cleaned the engine.
The vent cap where you fill the oil had been sprayed. Later I found water on the dipstick and some water (not coolant) in the oil. Three oil changes later things cleared up. IF you have a cracked head it will never clear up and your oil level will raise some over time.

Most likely: Head Gasket, Cracked Head/Block, Warped Head.

your toyoya has a head gasket leaking, it is leaking anti-freeze into the oil or into the exhaust.sometimes if you park a vehicle for too long moisture will form in the oil.you could try putting in some stop leak in it ,make sure it is for head gaskets and heads.try bars-leak.i had good luck with that brand before.then it would give you an idea if its a head gasket or not.if you have to pull the heads off make sure to take the heads to a machine shop and have them ground,in case they are warped.good luck.

Sounds like you have a blown head gasket. There is the possibility of a cracked head or a crack in your engine block but the engine would have to be tore down to determine this.

sounds like a cracked engine block or bad head gasket. either way it may be expensive to repair. The best thing to do is take it to a automobile repair place and have them check it out.
