If you're only just now deciding to take up reading, I would suggest starting with something small and lightweight... like a short story or something like that. Or find a book of poetry. Kids poetry. Shel Siverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends" is a good place to start. Or Dr. Seuss.
But I would definitely steer clear of Mein Kampf or The Bible until you're a little more "experienced". I'm a third year English major and I haven't touched either yet. I'll wait till I'm starting my PhD.

start with the Chronicles of Narnia (there were seven books, in order):
- Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe
- Prince Caspian
- Voyage of Dawn Treader
- Silver Chair
- Horse and his Boy
- Magician's Nephew
- Last Battle
then go to the Lord of the Rings (the movies, if you watched them, left out a lot of the written story); * begin with the Hobbit and then go to LOTR
if you got any time afterwards, read the Harry Potter series (again, movies left out a lot of the story)
These are well-written books (LOTR is the second most sold trilogy book in history, only behind the Bible!) so definitely recommend (plus they are heckuva lot better than the movies)
** The best way is probably to read the Bible first and then read the books I've listed above to see how analogous to the Bible they really are!

This depends on your age and your interests.
Both books you mentioned are lenghthy and detailed. You may want to start off with a biography of Adolph Hitler,or a book about the Bible.
Your local public library staff can get you started. The books are free (you have to bring them back!),and you have a wide variety from which to choose. You can pick from fiction or non-fiction. The sky's the limit.
Usually the Sunday paper lists the best sellers. They are very popular and are current.

I very much enjoyed your question. The Bible is an essential read because it is God's own Word. However, if you are simply looking for good literature, I suggest John Steinbeck. He is most famous for "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Of Mice and Men," but I would recommend something a little lighter but not entirely devoid of literary content. Read "Tortilla Flat," a wonderful little novel.

Literature is a great world to discover, it kind of depends on you what you should start with, what your interests are, fiction, non-fiction, murder mystery, romance, poetry, science fiction, fantasy, adventure, philosophy , politics religion, take a spin through your local bookstore and see if you find anything that looks interesting. Start with short stories that you feel would entertain you.
Maybe you like horror, romance or action.
When you begin reading think of yourself.
Maybe you are interested in quilting so you have enough enthusiasm to help you read about quilting.
I personally started my reading addiction to Juvenile terror stories and short horror fiction.
To keep it short, read what you love.

Something else. I'd recommend anything by Toni Morrison, Atonement by Ian McEwan, or anything by William Faulkner.

Something Else sounds like a good book. Anything Else also is a keeper.
