I at first didn't know USPS had planes, but it looks like they used to have a fleet of 727s to carry mail between cities. Why did they get rid of them?

They were to small to carry the volume of cargo they had and expected growth. The 727 was a fuel hog. Although, they were fitted with better, fuel efficient engines, they still required more fuel than a larger 2 engined cargo plane.

When you can fly a large Boeing or AeroBus for 1/3 less than a 727, and fly longer distances, it's a no brainer!

probably because UPS put em out of the air freight business. How do you compete with guaranteed next-day delivery? LOL
