My big toenail is in two vertical layers. There is not just a crack down the middle, but rather one is on top of the other. Obvious fungus problem, yea. The lowest layer appears to be relatively clear, but halfway up the toenail, there is a huge chunk of thick fungus ridden toenail that goes to the end of the toe. Why does that just sit there, and why isn't the normal toenail growing? The last time I trimmed my big toe was probably 10 years ago when I was 11.

i would go see a doctor about that. they can probably prescribe you some sort of anti-fungal that will clear it all up.

a dermatologist maybe, or a podiatrist

I'd see a doctor about getting Lamisil tablets or something to treat the fungal infection. The infection could be temporarily stopping the toenail from growing letting the fungus continue to thrive below. See a doctor. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get rid of it.

I think the HUGE question here is why have you waited so long to ask this? Go to the doctor or something. Good Luck ........ Hey or maybe you could be lucky and just not have to trim it...........LOL
