The United States was first selected by people from northern Europe and they weren't used to taking naps during the day. Their climate was not very hot and uncomfortable. The siesta was a break from work in the hottest part of the day in southern Europe where the temperatures were much warmer. For instance, Mexico was first discovered by the Spanish. Since the weather was usually warm, the siesta was adopted in Mexico. I've been on vacation in countries with a siesta and it really made sense in the middle of the summer. To make up for the siesta, shops were open till late.

US culture works too hard, and actually suffers efficiency problems as a result. A siesta would be nice, though I'm not really interested in taking an extra hour out of the middle of the day and tacking it on the end.

Its to do with the temperature, during the middle of the day it is to hot to do anything, so people like to rest in a cooler environment. Its nothing to do with having a rest from work, but instead about being unable to work due to the heat

Americans have a priority list. And near the top of that list is the pursuit of happiness. You can't pursue happiness without money. Siestas would cause a loss in revenue. And no American employer is going to pay you to sleep! Nice thought though.

Actually, we do! It's not official, of course, but you may spot a few people sneaking in little catnaps in front of their computers when they're supposed to be on-the-clock. The rest of the world has it right when you can take a quick nap and wake up more refreshed, energetic and productive.

You know, I ask myself that every day.
I wish this country had siestas.
You know I feel we are such a fast-paced society that is highly stressed out...I'm sure our lack of siesta time is because it would not be considered "efficient" or "good time-management" in our country.

because the cut-throat capitalist society in which we live has pretty much destroyed our collective sense of self-preservation and our ability to relax and enjoy life
