Large blocks of stock routinely "trade" between institutions just past the 4:00 PM NYSE close. If they occur within 5 minutes past 4:00 PM, the posted stock price will change if that block trade occurred at a price different from the market close.

After hours trading isn't illegal. All stock exchanges have this option and it usually runs from 4:15 pm (eastern) to 8:00 pm (eastern).
