The beats are banging son! You can dance to it, the drums move you and in many cases of non-commercial rap which is about blinging and ho's real rap is a means of communicating whats happening on the streets.
When NWA first hit, that was a wake up call for black america, here youth from South Central were exposing police corruption, the impact of drugs especially crack and the gang banging that was going on at the time.
And don't forget the numerous artists that made it big with a positive message. Public Enemy was busy talking about dirty politics.
Rap like any popular media is not just black and white, but ranges a wide spectrum of ideas and beliefs.

people like rap for the same reason why people like anything else. but to say it is not music is no more than you ranting about a genre of music that YOU don't care for.
i don't like bluegrass - but to say that it's not even music is very narrow minded, because it is music to SOMEBODY. music is art & art is subjective. a Picasso may be just a bunch of paint on a canvas to one person & a crowning acheivement to someone else.
i don't care for the direction rap music has gone in the last 16 years, but there is still an underground rap music culture that is as rich & vibrant as it was in its genesis. BTW - the first time i brought home Hendrix you know what my mom said? "i mean, its just a guy screaming into a mike like an idiot...it's not even music!" sound familiar?

I have to agree with Jeans. Some people were just born with no taste in music or class. By the way I am making a rap video. So, I need a bunch of angry guys to shout at the camera, a whole bunch of pimped out cars, tons of women (whores) wearing barely anything, and the same beats used in every other rap song.

Rap tells a story just like a rock song, love song, classical song, country song, electronica song, or whatever the genre may be. As with any song, if a person or group of people can relate to the message the rapper/singer/composer is trying to convey, then it becomes popular with that person or group of people listening.
Just because you cannot relate to what the rapper is trying to say doesn't neccessarily mean that it's crap. There is crap in all genres of music, but that doesn't make all music crap.

People may like rap because its just another way to express themsleves. Rap is just a different form of regular music. Even though some people don't call it music it is music to those that like rap.

It's music but I am not a rap fan. I think some people like it for the beats and others may like the message, even though the message can be very harsh and uninformative.

Ah, rap. The current popular genre of "music".
See, people enjoy fantasies, escapism, in some way or another. Listening to someone cuss to a rhythm, and talk about "poppin' whitey cops" and "whitey keepin' ya down" and "pimpin' it wit' mah hoez" allows them a bit of escapism into the artist's world of freedom, excessive wealth, and counter-racism.
Although this isn't always the case, an analysis of the most popular rap artists in general holds the above to be true.

RAP IS THE BEST WAY TO SING ABOUT YOUR HISTORY OR JUST THE BEST WAY TO EXPRESS YOUR SELF.

does anybody really like rap, as in like??! I think a lot of people are into it only because they think that a lot of people are into it so they just go on with the "trend". It's mass psychology or mass hypnosis at work. They try to learn the rap songs to be cool and pretend to like them but when they go home and all alone, they listen to some oldie stuff like the carpenters, barry manilow and air supply!!!
