A monoatomic ion (as opposed to a polyatomic ion) is an ion consisting of only a single atom which has either gained or lost an electron.
Some examples would be:
Na+, Chloride Cl-, Fe+3, O-2, Ca+2,.....

By comparison, a polyatomic ion is an ion which is made up of more than one atom with an imbalance in the charge.
For example, some common polyatomic ions are:
Ammonium NH+, Acetate, C2H3O2-, Chlorate ClO4-, Nitrate NO3-, ....

The atoms of a polyatomic ion are bonded covalently together, but have fewer/more electrons than would normally be in the molecule, giving the entire thing a positive or negative charge.
These ions (mono- or poly-) will ionicly bond [a very strong type of bonding] with other ions to form a neutral ionic compound.
For example:
Na+ and Cl- for NaCl
NH4+ and NO3- form NH4NO3, .....
