I had the same bike. Now I have an '03. These bikes only get about 33 mpg with "average" riding speeds. IF you get on the throttle a lot, then you will get less, or if you do highway speeds in excess of 75 mph. The biggest problem is air flow. The exhaust system is very restrictive and has a lot of 90 degree bends in it. After market pipes and a K&N air filter will do the most to improve your gas mileage. But you won't get anything near 50 mpg unless you are always driving long distances and under 55 mph!. try the following website at delphi formums:

Be hard to get 50MPG with a 1500. But you should be getting better than you are. I figure a hair over 30 is what you're getting now. Time for a tune-up? Or back off.
