I believe the people around you influence you, but you are the one who's ultimately responsible for your destiny.

I'm not quite sure I understand this question. However, I'm going to try to answer.
In my life, I ultimately decide what my destiny is. Of course, there have been times when I had to conform to fit into a certain situation, but only temporarily.
You mentioned that the media presents people who look like you, so I'm inclined to think that you are saying that you either look like a movie star or the boy next door. Whatever your case is, you should seek to figure out what skin you are comfortable in and say to hell with parents, managers, and the media.

Well, I like to think that I am an independent person, but I find that my destiny to some extent is being decided by others because I'm not willing to give something up that is in the control of others.

there is no destiny...things just happen at random. You can try to control it but in the end it's a crap shoot!

I think the "nurture"...surroundings do have some major impacts on who we become....but you can break cycles and set trends rather than follow them....it takes awareness and keeping yourself educated....know yourself and know why you do and say what you do.....knowing is half the battle.
I guess half and half is my final answer.
