Many people talk about American being the "obese" nation, but it is also the nation with the most people who willingly develop eating disorders and become too thin.

I would be very interested in knowing where you got your statistics on this, because according to the ones with which I am familiar, the percentage of American women with problems like anorexia and bulemia is virtually identical with those of other countries for which this data is available.

I think it's a stereotype that American women are obsessed with their bodies and develop eating disorders. YES, it's true that there are plenty of women with eating disorders, but there are even more women who do NOT have the disorders. Also, the majority of girls and women I personally know, are happy with their bodies and have no interest in doing anything drastic to change the way they look. :)

As for me, I'm tall and skinny but it has nothing to do with an eating disorder. I have a fast metabolism and am a bit on the hyperactive side as well. I eat all the time, but I never eat huge amounts and I try to stay away from foods high in fat and cholesterol because heart disease runs in my family.

Anyway, the only thing that bothers me about the way I look is that someone might MISTAKENLY think I'm obsessed with weight and that's why I'm so thin. I actually wish I could gain a little weight! But, my metabolism won't let me. I'm sure by the time I'm middle-aged, I won't have this situation anyway. *chuckle* Then again, my grandma lived to be 90 and she was slender her entire life.

you're really undereating. 1200-1500 energy will be a sturdy volume to eat at the same time as attempting to drop some weight as you could commence dropping muscle extremely than fat as your body would bypass into starvation mode and carry on to its fat. An ingesting disease is demanding to describe. Do you experience captivated with weightloss and imagine about food continuously? Are you hunting for strategies to eat as low as available e.g. hiding food, throwing away food secretly? Has your mood replaced? Do you experience withdrawn? Do you've a warped view on your self does all of us imagine you're a common weight at the same time as actual you experience your are fat? if you're apprehensive that you've an ingesting disease then talk to someone like a figure or a nurse or close pal. once you've a difficulty then that's sturdy that you're noticing it as many victims are in denial. Nip it in the bud as an ingesting disease will be existence destroying and is only no longer nicely worth it!!!

Because the media and our fellow men and woman think that we should look like a perfect hour-glass shape. and even thinner is good too. so says the media. And as women we truly feel like this is what men want and expect us to look like. And anything less than that is fat and unexceptable. Unfortunately not many women understand that while men love to LOOK at those women they fall in love with your plain ole average girl. A supermodel 20years ago only weighed 8%less than the average woman. Today a supermodel weighs about 20% and up less than the average woman.

Well, public image has a lot to do with it. I think it's because of the way we eat here, versus say Europe. We eat very unhealthy and a lot of processed foods. I'm guilty of that myself...The only thing that saves me is genetics and a semi-high metabolism. A lot of women don't figure genetics into it either, and think that through dieting they can change their body, but if both sides of your family are short and heavy-set...then no matter what you do you are most likely going to be like that too no matter how much you exercise or diet.....hence obsessiveness, bulemia, and anorexia.

All about perception....and we perceive things the way the media presents it. I think the media should try an experiment.....like at New Years when Mariah Carey was all glamed up and looking good...she was way heavier than the media has "allowed" sexy women to be. I was kinda proud of her for putting herself out there and not being the typical thin as a rail type.....
Also...the food we have on the market is not condusive to health and fitness.....now I am hungry and want to go to the store....bye....need more food...LOL!

Because society in America puts too much pressure on females to look ultra thin. Shame on American society. India doesn't do that and as a result women there don't feel pressured that way. They like enjoying their normal natural womanly shape.

It's not just american women, or just women, for that matter. Men ,women all over the world can suffer from it. Most eating disorders stem from pychological problems. binging and vomiting repeatedly is called Bulimia Nervosa. http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/bulimianervosa.htm

anorexia is the refusal to eat.http://www.emedicinehealth.com/anorexia_nervosa/article_em.htm

maybe it's because the world tells us we have to be toothpick thin to be loved?

I remember once walking down the street with my best friend and a car honked at us as they approached, we both turned to look (stupid I know but it was an automatic reaction) and one of the guys leaned out the window and yelled "not her, she's fat!!" (my friend was overweight and I am thin)... I can imagine how hearing crap like that your whole like would have a negative impact.
