YES! if you're going to a restaurant that you would normally sit down at, as in all the chains that now offer a "to go" option. The designated take-out server doesn't make as much as the regular servers and they have to do all the grunt work in the kitchen once the food is cooked. Your regular server will just pick the plate up and take it out to the table. A take out server needs to remember that you need ketchup with your fries or wetnaps with your ribs all while dealing with the busy kitchen, taking orders on the phone, and having your food hot and ready when you get there. You don't need to tip 20% but even a dollar makes you a good person in their eyes. And if they come out to your car in the pouring rain and wait for you to get off your cell phone before you pay them, then you'd better slip a few dollars their way.

i worked a little at chevys and one time i had to do take out and i was put to do the exact same service as a waiter without the interaction other than over the phone and when they paid. i was also suppose to make sure the food was made just before the customer got their toassure freshness and top it off i had to bag everything and tip the cooks. so i think a small tip not the 15% but maybe a 8% would be fair.

YES!!!! These people aren't your servants, maybe they are not waiting on you hand and foot while you sit at a table, but they are providing a service. Ever heard a of delivery man? Ummm, who do you think puts the food together, and gets all your sauces you want, and makes sure everything is straight w/ your order? Obviously many of the previous respondents have never worked for a restaurat before.

I think it depends on the restaurant and service - if you order a large quantity of food for pick up, it might be appropriate to tip; or if you receive exceptional service - friendly, fast - no waiting - you might wish to tip. I usually tip when I have the extra change :-)

Wow. Many cheapos have responded! Yeah, I still do. It's polite and esp. if I go in there a lot so that I get treated better next time, etc. I don't tip too much, a dollar or two.

You tip because they provide a service for you and well if your picking it up the waiter/waitress isn't there so you don't tip. Think of it this way, do you tip when you are picking up food at MacDonald's?

Yes! I used to work in a restaurant. It took time to box everything up, and then bag it, make sure that all condiments were included, add utensils, etc. Give at least $1-2, unless it's a larger order.

You should only tip when you have food delivered. That's all!! And I only tip when I go to restaurants. But otherwise, no.

I would tip them if they gave you something extra or did something above and beyond filling the order you requested. It's up to you if you think it went above and beyond. Like extra napkins or forks wouldn't count, but an extra box of rice or something would.
