As a naturalized US citizen and wife of a veteran, I say NO. Each of these holidays mean the world to us - you missed one--Flag Day (yesterday), Washington's Birthday (I don't call it President's day - as there should be a day to honor our first President). For each of these holidays we celebrate it in family, the US Flags are everywhere, house is decorated. And before the meal, a prayer is said to honor all who for our freedom paid the ultimate price. We go to our small town parade. Dress in red-white-blue. When we have been overseas on Memorial Day or Veteran's DAy, we have always made it a point to visit a National Cemetary. Our son died (not in a conflict but in an auto accident) we always have red-white-blue flowers and flags on his grave....
So, no, these days are very special to us. And as a naturalized citizen, they have come to mean what America is to me.
Did you fly your flags yesterday?? Our towns had them all over the place!

I think to some people they never had any real meaning, because they have bought into the notion that America is evil incarnate. Listen to the network news and you will hear the parrots of the left preach their gospel of how awful America is for existing. No they don't say it that plainly but listen closely the message is clear enough. Several years ago I read about a history text that was being considered that went on and on about Marilyn Monroe for four pages and gave a single paragraph to George Washington. This is just one example of how a few in this country have managed to pervert what our founding fathers tried to create with the great experiment which is America. Granted America is not perfect we have made mistakes, but if there is a better place to call home it is an extremely well kept secret. Enough of my diatribe in answer to your question. All the holidays that you have listed honor armed conflict, and we all know that any form of aggression is just not PC. So fly your flag proudly, be proud that you are an American, and vote for people who really have the best interest of this country at heart and not the U.N.

A few years ago I would have said those holidays have lost meaning to Americans. But not since 9/11 and the war in Iraq, where our fathers, sons and brothers are dying. There has been a new found respect for the veteran. In my opinion, you can go on vacation, have a cook out and still be patriotic. Some ppl choose to celebrate instead of mourn our fallen heroes and survivors of war. It depends on your perspective! Happy 4th!

I blame a lot of it on the greediness of businesses. Virtually everything is open any more on these holidays, and it's all about the big sales. On the other hand, if people would boycott, and refuse to shop on at least one day, then maybe it would be less about sales and more about the holiday's original intent.
Ultimately it is up to people to put meaning into those days for themselves, someone else shouldn't have to make you, or do it for you.
Once you have lost someone you care about in a war, or served in a war, you will have more respect for holidays like Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.

The change is very noticeable. It seems to go along with the fact that people use to work a lot harder a lot younger, and now you see people in their twenties still acting like kids. Makes one think parent's are not spending as much time teaching tradition and responsibilities as they use to. Sad.

I would say that those holidays have renewed poignancy because of September 11, especially for those who have family and friends serving in Iraq.
