I mean, come on, isn't it time we got over ourselves? Are we STILL that insecure?

Hey, I'm as irritated by all the 1966 crap as everyone else, and for that reason alone I can't possibly support them in the final - the media will get insufferable if they win. But how exactly does that mean England is up itself? Every nation with a strong team and a realistic chance talks that talk. It's not just England, for goodness' sake. Scots don't talk like that because our team hasn't been good enough to have those pretentions for quite a few years. Does that make me want to curl into a resentful ball and curse our richer neighbours for scoring more goals than we do? Does it fcuk!

Come on, grow up, if we keep talking this crap we'll just keep embarrasing ourselves.

For the record YES I am Scottish. I lived 3% of my life in England (late teens) and the rest has been in Scotland.

I'm Scots born with English/Welsh mother and Irish father so i support any British team...!
Yeah the automatic support for England's opponents can be a bit churlish. It makes Scots come off as bitter and twisted which they aren't (and i consider myself Scottish if forced to make a choice!)

A good, sensible question.

I had a Scottish friend at school and she refused to support England, though I supported both. I was quite hurt by this, I didn't understand why at the time. Maybe it shouldn't bother me?

I know Scotland wants to be seen as its own country, but people can show their individuality in better ways than mocking their neighbours.
And England feels pretty insecure as a nation too, I reckon. We make a lot of noise, yes, but that's just the usual. Remember all the fuss a few years back about fans flying the St George Cross because it was also the flag used by white supremacists? The public of course responded defiantly by covering their cars, houses and clothing in George Crosses! XD

All our nations worked together to fight in the wars of the last century. If they hadn't, then we might not have this freedom and privelege to express our opinions like this, and we might have lost this little island we share. That's got to be the positive side to Anglo Scottish relations, at least.

So - if anyone's into tennis - just to let you know I will be cheering on Andy Murray at Wimbledon later this month. ;o)

The irish are the same from my experience. My friends and I supported Scotland and Ireland in previous world cups but when we were in Dublin for the last one to watch an England game, the locals were all cheering for the other team. What's all that about??! Its a shame we can't enter a UK super team into the world cup but then again 90% of the players would probably be English..... (Just kidding!)

well apparently yes your lot are still very insecure... I was married to a Scottish girl for 17 years and had to put up with all kinds of crap about being a stupid English man from her family I agree with you, the Scots should get over it.. mind you every time they sing the Scottish national anthem they drag up the past about some mad bloody king who killed a lot of them so what? it's history, move on, get as life, a real one..if the Scots didn't have the English to hate then they wouldn't know what to do and probably kill each other anyway... I seem to recall a massacre in Glen Coe, the MacDonalds clan was it? could have been the Burger King clan for all I care I don't know who cares anyway.

I never cheer for Scotland, Ireland or Wales. I've been to bars in these English outposts and they always cheer for the other team. I remember Macedonia scoring and the Irish leapt to their feet. Pity......... I passed on my joy when Russian knocked Ireland out for all you Irish folks who remember it.
