Otherwise you would want to leave it at the factory default which is usually cable select. Almost all laptop hard drives only require a jumper to set this; a tiny jumper that is normally used on SCSI drives. You will also need a converter to cable the hard drive to the ide controller and power inside a desktop. It is essential to connect this in the correct direction or it will fry the laptop drive. Go to a computer shop for this.

You can buy an IDE to USB adaptor kit that comes with a power supply. You can then use the laptop hard drive as a very large flash drive. It can be left in all the time as a second drive but you then lose the portability. You are better off buying another hard drive.

Forget it. Transplant the hard drive to your desktop or create a network between the desktop and laptop.

Just share the root of the drive through a network and forget doing a transplant (and risking damaging that brittle little connector). All you'll need is a cross-over ethernet cable. You can boot from it and everything... if you absolutely have to.

You can use windows and network the 2 togther for a few bucks (just need network cards & a cable). Otherwise it is cheaper to buy a 2nd one vs all the work you are in for to do a physical swap.
