I was reading about growth in this field, but there wasn't any job description. I'd appreciate any serious answers. Thanks.

I got these descriptions from the Department of Labor site.

Computer hardware engineer:
"Research, design, develop, and test computer or computer-related equipment for commercial, industrial, military, or scientific use. May supervise the manufacturing and installation of computer or computer-related equipment and components."

Computer software engineer:
"Develop, create, and modify general computer applications software or specialized utility programs. Analyze user needs and develop software solutions. Design software or customize software for client use with the aim of optimizing operational efficiency. May analyze and design databases within an application area, working individually or coordinating database development as part of a team."

"Typical Computer Engineer" is something of an odd statement. In most companies, there isn't such a thing as a computer engineer, people are either software specialists or hardware specialists, and so titles are taken from that.

Computer Engineering as a major has started showing up in a number of schools, however. Usually it means that there is a mix of computer science and electrical engineering in the coursework, on the theory that people can be better hardware or software engineers if they know some of both subjects. The term has also been used to distinguish electrical engineering in general from engineers working specifically on processors or other low level computer hardware.

The moral here is that there isn't a clear cut definition, so if you see listings for computer engineers at a company you're interested in, you should ask them what the job tasks are.

Depends on whether he is a hardware or software engineer. Software engineers design/write software. Hardware engineers put systems together and configure hardware. There are also network engineers that build computer networks.
