The best shortstop ever is Ozzie Smith. 13 straight Gold Gloves and he wasn't a bad hitter. He had 580 stolen bases in his career, #20 on the all-time list. Who can forget his game winning home run he hit in the 1985 playoffs against the Dodgers. Classic.
Currently, the best shortstop is Edgar Renteria. He had an off season hitting last year, but he is great defensively and a good solid hitter, especially in clutch situations. I think he has the best all around package at this point (defense, power, average, speed). Omar Vizquel is good too, but he's at the end of his career. I like Derek Jeter too, but I hate the Yankees too much and can't be objective about Jeter.

The greatest Hall of Fame shortstop was Honus Wagner but nobody was a better fielding shortstop than the incredible Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. Today I would say Derek Jeter is the best.

wIth the glove, no doubt Ozzie Smith. He had more range that anyone I have ever saw. The third baseman could have taken a nap knowing Ozzie was playing shortstop. He also made it over to second base quicker than anyone I have ever seen. Plus a rifle arm. With the bat, Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs was an awesome shortstop in the 50s and 60s before they moved him to first base. A-Rod, Alex Rodriquez, when he played shortstop for the Texas Ranger was a great hitter. Yet if you want to combine fielding and hitting, I would say Ernie Banks.

Derek Jeter, hands down. He means more than numbers to the Yankees, he is the heart and soul of that team. He is more than a clutch player, he is the kind of guy who dives into the seats in a meaningless game in August against the Red Sox, when the Yankees are already ahead several runs. He means bringing leadership to young players like Robinson Cano. And face it, if you were a pitcher , who would make you most comfortable anchoring your infeild? Thats right, THE GREATEST SS IN MLB HISTORY!!!!

Present: Derek Jeter, #2 and captain of the New York Yankees.
His only competition a few years ago would have been Alex Rodriguez.

A-Rod. The fact that Jeter plays shortstop for the Yankees is a testament to Jeter's selfishness and Torre's stupidity.

Present Edgar Renteria hands down. Of all-time everyone knows it's Ozzie (the magician) Smith.
