Well, lets see,

Colombia = Colombian
Venezuela = Venezuelan
Mexico = Mexican
Canada = Candians

VERY good point. I've often wondered this myself, and I'm a U.S. citizen! I think in a way it comes from way back during the Revolutionary War, and when people from Europe talk about us, they think of us as Americans, even though like you said, we are ALL Americans.

I also feel like the term 'America' and 'Americans' has been taken and used by some in the right wing, in an ugly way, in which they want to seperate people. In other words, let's say you don't believe in the 'war with Iraq'. They'd say you're not a good American and you don't love your country. Which I say is B.S.

And I'm rather conservative myself, so I'm not totally against the right wingers. And I do support the troops.

Because we are true Americans in the sense that we decided to join out states together in one common cause rather than have separate countries like in South America. As a matter of fact, we fought a war for that right. South American countries have not decided to become one nation under God.

Because we're the winners! And winners get the choice ;-)

Seriously though, what should we call ourselves? The Statespeople? The Uniteds? If you figure out a better name and get everyone to use it than we won't call ourselves Americans anymore. We'll be the USAtopians or whatever.

We name ourselves after the country we are from, not the continent.
ie. People from colombia are Colombians, people from france and French, people from the United States of america are Americans.

But yes, if all people from europe are Europeans, then all people from one of the America continents are americans.

What would you prefer: Uniters? Statists? Unitedstatesmen and women? After 200 years, I don't think we're going to change, and of course, Canadians prefer to be called Canadians, Brazilians, Brazilians, etc. That pretty much leaves American to us.

because that's what we learned to call ourselves. Why do people overseas call us Americans? If you live in south or north america there is nothing wrong with calling yourself that.

Because that is how we are referred to through out the world. Those from Brazil are referred to Brazilians, ect. I know it's a hard concept to grasp but it the way it is.
