I really don't know, but football players also wear uniforms that accentuate their package...they must all be gay to by those standards...:)

Because it's part of the traditional costume in ballet. Also, it is much easier to do jumps, jetes, splits, ronde de jambes, plies, etc. etc. without having to cope with folds of material. You need something that clings like a second skin, and that's what they wear. They also wear a ballet belt, so as NOT to accentuate their 'package'. The belt helps to compress them and keep it all in a firm bundle.
Some of the male ballet dancers are extraordinarily agile, lithe and flexible, and it's a pleasure to watch them dance. Unlike what some people think, they aren't all gay, either! There are a number of heterosexual males in ballet, and a number of very successful marriages between male and female ballet dancers.

The jockstrap thing is called a dance belt and it would help hold you in place. I would definately wear tighter fitting pants if you really are opposed to the black tights the other guys wear. The teacher won't see if you are turned out correctly without being able to see your hips. The tights may "look ridiculous" but it's what guys have worn to do ballet for years. It's not as if you have to wear a leotad and pink tights.

What would you suggest they wear...a skirt to cover it up? Loose pants that would get in the way of the dance??? Go without dance belts and take a real chance of serious injury? They wear what is appropriate to the genre of dance. And, it just appears large because it is hiked up to protect the package from injury. I could say the same about Baseball or football players...but those bulges are from protective cups. Dancers usually don't wear protective cups.

Goldwing already gave the best (and correct) answer, so I just want to state that neither all nor even most male dancers are gay. Definitely there are more gay men in dance compared to the general population, but the rest are in a great position to meet women.

Most, not all, male ballet dancers are gay. I think they accentuate their package to attract other gay men....
