Have you done a scan disc or disc clean up?

If no...try those first. Then try and defrag again.

Also b4 defragging...close all unnecessary activity ((including closing your internet connection). Ctrl/Alt/Delete and close all but IE.

Good luck :)

Do not close "all but IE" when using task manager. For one thing, IE has nothing to do with it, for another, if you close all but IE your computer will stop running, as you need Windows Explorer, which is not Internet Explorer.

By "icons at the bottom are closed" you might mean that the task buttons at the bottom of the defrag program are grayed out. Which means that the program itself is not working correctly if at all.

To avoid doing a Windows repair, you should try running scan disc. You can do that by clicking start, run, and typing:
chkdsk /f
You'll get a box saying can't, but next time computer restarts, y or n, so type y and hit enter and restart.

If that doesn't do it, then do a Windows repair, which involves putting the Windows disk in the drive and going through the install process until the install process detects a Windows installation and asks you if you want to do a repair or install to another partition. Do not choose "press R for recovery console" as that is somethng else.
