I would say that life was a lot harder 30 years ago.
Technology today has made life much easier for everyone. We can travel faster, cook faster, talk on the move, work on the move and many other things.
Having said that though, I do understand what you are saying. Technology has made us work harder. We take our laptops with us on the train to continue working, whereas 30 years ago we could have just sat back and enjoyed the journey.
We can 'nuke' a meal in seconds and eat it just as quickly, whereas 30years ago real food was cooked and people ate as a family.
Children played with boxes, skateboards, rollerskates etc. These days most are sat in front of a pc or some kind of hand held game. The imagination has been taken from them and most are unable to find things to do anymore if it isn't plugged in!
There are many things I wish weren't invented, but if you think about it, life is more simple now. It isn't necessarily a good thing and I am sure with technology improving the way it is, it will only get worse.

I completely understand why you ask something like this, but here's a thought that might change your outlook. Life isn't as simple as it was thirty years ago, but it is still an amazing time to be alive. I think that right now is also the very oddest time to be alive in history. Humanity is on the brink of all things right now, both good and bad. Technology is making huge leaps and bounds. There are more incredible products out right now than ever. Science has come so far that we are on the verge of understanding everything, that's right, everything- from black holes to disease. We are smarter than we have ever been. Politics around the world are in shambles, but after this time period, everything will be very different. It will have to be.
The world is going through some stranger times than ever before seen. Religion, Terrorism, the Internet, pocket sized computers, weapons of mass destruction, epidemics, earthquakes, Tsunamis, Global Warming, Medicine, Bush, Bin Laden, Faith, and, unfortunately, an overall feeling of fear.
Thirty years ago Bob Dylan said "The Times, They are a-Changing". Well they still are. I just can't help but feel that after all these issues are done, the world will truly be a lot more like what it is supposed to be.
Some might even argue that some things are simpler today. No civil rights wars, simplicity of communications, No Cold War, the US is not a country divided the way it was then.
Right now there are sattelites in space to inform golfers of exactly how far away the flag is. Isn't that cool? I think its great
As a whole, the Earth is still a great place to live. Also we have to hope that things will be better in the future. We have to look forward instead of looking back. The world is still what we make of it.

THIRTY YEARS AGO??? Wtf, dude! I'm 41, so thirty years ago, I was 11 years old! Thirty years is not that long. Did you mean 130? or 300? You must be what, 12 years old?
Anyway, define "simple" and then explain why you think life was "simpler" in the past than it is now. Life has always been complicated, just in different ways.

what's the betting that if there was a similar forum to this 30 yrs ago someone would have posted similar question (though maybe not to the war years!).
Every generation thought things were better the previous generation, that the music of today is crap, that summers/winters used to be better and that the TV was more original. It is the temporal version of the grass is always greener.
Peace out

I don't really think it was simple, even then. It's just that the problems were different than they are now. People used to trust each other more than they do now, and that much at least is a fact. The reasons are not really very hard to understand, either.

Life is never simple. It just seems that way when you look back. They had more to fear from deseases and sickness. Crime was still an issue. People didn't get along. People were constantly afraid of a nuclear war between USA and the USSR.

Because our culture is more complicated. Remember that there are still cultures that enjoy the simple life of strapping gourds to thier bodies for clothing and hunting wild pigs with sticks. Alas they remember the good old days when life was simpler and they just used rocks to hunt.
