Honestly the cheapest laptops I've found were generic. Not made by any major vendor like Dell, Toshiba, or IBM.

I don't recommend buying generic computers and HP seem to be rather cheap too. Don't by HP.

The rule of thumb is you get what you pay for.

The cheapest one (new) right now if a Compaq.

There is a Compaq for a little over 400 after mail in rebates.
The Dell Inspiron B130 is retailing for 499.99.

If this is just a temporary solution (i.e. you don't plan to keep this laptop for long) go for a refurbished model or might I suggest Ebay.

If this is a long term solution, I suggest spending a few dollars because in the long run it'll actually save you money and a headache.

OLPC (One Laptop per Child) will be the cheapest laptop once it is out in the market.

You can buy OLD laptops for $18 but I assume you mean recent new laptops not the 33MHZ one I see at the local shoppe.

For that I would look at used laptops or ones that have been refurbished at your local retailer, such as Fry's Electronics.

Dells are also cheap as long as you don't want the latest and greatest hardware.

i got a laptop Toshiba, it was around 800.00-1,000.00 and it has so many things and does a real lot of cool stuff! i think it is a satellite 145, it has a 15.4 inch screen..real nice! it also burns Cd's DVDs and has so many cool options as well! mine is working great! i even split a coffee on it, and it still works...i had to have it cleaned inside but it works........oh, also if you buy one make sure you buy the xtra warranty, it is so worth it! if you spill on it, drop it, or what ever the warranty will cover it, and if you are like me, and are neat, but every now and then have bad luck, you will be SO happy you got the xtra protection, besides it is always better to be safe, besides if someone like a friend spills on it or whatever, you will be able to get it fixed! that is so cool!!! and SO worth it!!!
i got mine at best buy, and they always have sales and good deals, so look around and hold off for a great deal! they sometimes give you a free printer, or something like that as a bundle purchase...look into it! good luck......Toshiba really is great!

You can often go to school district surplus centers and get them for around $100. These are fine if all you are doing is surfing the web on them.
