A good boss should be approachable but it doesn't mean they have to be your freind.
They have to draw a fine line between being your boss and being your friend because as a boss, they have the value of the company in their hands. If they become too friendly others may take advantage of their nature which makes it harder for the boss to control them.
If you are finding them un-approachable you should bring this up with them. Ask to have a meeting and discuss your concerns.
They may not like what they hear but sometimes they are unaware how they portray themselves. They may even respect you for speaking up.
Don't forget though......... bosses are still people. They still pooh in the morning and they look awful naked!!!

Take him as he is. It is not a good idea to be your boss's friend.
Just do your work, and prove that you are worth having around through tomorrow. Go home and have friends among your neighbors. His job is to watch that you make money for THE COMPANY. (get over it)

you might want to find another boss
boss feel that they are above everyone else
if you can prove that you can save him/make him money then he will be able to be more approachable.
just go beyond expectation on your job.

Smiling
Giving him/her a gift (only do this on a holiday or his/her birthday)
Being nice
Being Friendly
