A regular football season, for the elite of Europe, generally starts in September. But with world cup qualifiers, European Cup qualifiers, Champions League etc. some players may only get about 4 to 8 weeks of rest or holidays. So from about beginning of May to August is about the maximum they would get. However as the 2006 World Cup is proving, June and July are from from being months of rest.

Actually some big clubs go on tours. Barcelona and Chelsea will be touring the US playing MLS Teams.

Most other Big Clubs let their players have holidays and such but they still have regular training sessions and friendlys to keep their players in Shape. Being a player is a Full time job 24/7.

actually footballers play football from early August until mid or late May.* Therefore they are playing in the summer and spring as well as the autumn and winter. And then in the even years there are the Euros and the World Cup also in the summer.

* I assume you are talking about in Europe. Other continents have differing schedules

Not only are the schedules long but in the off-season the team is signing players, training for the next season and spending time w/ friends and family.
