I'm moving to Portland in a month. I'm in the process of all of the paperwork for the state licensing. I keep hearing stories, though, about teachers having a hard time getting hired in Oregon. Any advice anyone???

Send your resume to every school you're qualified to work at. If there are no openings this year, substitute for a year and let them get to know you. Then, when there are openings, they'll already know how wonderful you are.

First, where in OR do you want to settle? Portland public schools have been losing teachers due to funding cuts so there may be openings there and a willingess of grant provisional certifcation until you complete a cert program. Try searching the links below. I used similar links for WA state and found job postings for the various schools in the area in which I live. I have years of industry experience and got provisional certification to teach business technology to 9-12. I have two years to complete the certification requirements by attending special evening certification training for what used to be called Voc-Tech. You're correct in assuming the need for Spec Ed teachers. I'm learning SO much about the challenges teachers face and how important the Spec Ed teachers are to the schools. By the way, take a look at WA state--just across the river from Portland and NO income tax! Happy hunting!

A friend of mine just came up a couple of months ago. She went around and talked to some of the schools and the principals. they are talking about closing some schools and probably laying off teachers. It really doesn't look good, so she is waiting another year or so.
