How many bands can people name that have written ALL their own songs? I can only think of Depeche Mode, The Editors and Kraftwerk as examples.
PS When I say written all their own songs, this includes B sides as well. And I think New Order have written their own songs as well, including a track they wrote as Joy Division, called Ceremony.

New Order cover a Velvet Underground track, 'Sister Ray'. The Arcade Fire are probably the most original band to emerge in the last few years - and no covers yet. Don't be too down on covers though you should hear 'Song To The Siren' by This Mortal Coil. Also Nouvelle Vague made an album covering the likes of Depeche Mode and Joy Division and it's fantastic

so you regard never having done a cover version as some kind of virtue?
I have nothing but respect for songwriters, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to do other peoples songs, too.

Jawara, actually the RHCP covered The Ohio Players' "Love Roller Coaster" and Stevie Wonders "Higher Ground".
Not that that matters, IMHO. No one should be penalized for having covered stuff they admire, and remakes can be great.
Danuitti:
The Beatles did lots of covers, particularly earlier on.
Zeppelin covered Robert Johnson's "Traveling Riverside Blues"
Hendrix covered Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower"
Clapton covered Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" then later did an entire album of Johnson's tunes.
bunch of unoriginal hacks, the lot of them, eh?

311 writes all their own music. The only song they have they didn't write is that remake of The Cure's "Love Song" that they did for a movie.
Oh yeah, Green Day and Blink 182 are two of the worst bands in history, I can tell they right their own music because it sucks.
My band is all original.

Green Day (Billie Joe Armstrong writes 99% while the other band members (Mike and Tre) have written one or two)
Blink 182 (Tom DeLonge, with assistance from Mark and Travis)

Amon Amarth, Cradle Of Filth, Children Of Bodom...hell pretty much all death and black metal bands write their own material. Although they do sometimes do covers but hey who hasn't?
