Walter Payton was the greatest player on the field, and gave so much back especially to kids. For years he would send presents to orphanages and needy children anonymously. Even after his Death he still continues to give.
"In 1998 Walter continued his many philanthropic works through his Walter Payton Foundation. Through his personal involvement and devotion to children's causes he eased the suffering of many of our nation's neediest children"

Without "disrespecting" any of the fine answers on this subject. How can Reggie White not be present already...Derrick Thomas is another, however; in my opinion, Walter Payton was the greastest on/off the field player the NFL has ever seen...

My choice would be Jim Brown. Jim Brown was a marvelous football player, arguably the greatest football player of all time. But like Muhammud Ali, it was his actions off the field that spoke the loudest.
In his time as a football player and citizen, he has given thousands of hours to volunteer community work, cancer drives, charities, environmental organizations, and numerous other non-profit causes.
Jim Brown also spoke for minority groups such as African Americans, the disabled, women, the youth, and AIDS victims. Brown was both a great athlete and a humanitarian.
On top of it all, Brown was also one of the 70's most popular and influential actors.

The best NFL player was Walter Payton, he was remarkable on and off the field. It takes a lot for me to say that considering I am a Packer fan.

Drew Bledsoe has been a really classy guy since coming into the league. He took his dethroning to Tom Brady like a champ and never complained. He's also always been very active in communities as well with charities. As far as on field performance, he's on top of his game as long as he's not being rushed, not sacked, intercepted, and coached by Parcells.

Troy Aikman. Dallas Cowboys. He not only was raised with high ethics, morals and standards, he employed these on the field and became a hero. Now a Sports Announcer, he is just the same. His actions and the way he carries himself place him a cut above the rest.

He is still an excellent player today ,but in his career he has done so many things to help others. Also, in his career he has had many problems and he, instead of sitting there complaining about them, he played for his team setting the example for all players playing and will be playing football.
