There are variety shows in Japan where the 'tarento' or celebrities show off their fashion where just a pair of pants with a designer label could cost $240. or 24,000 yen or shoes over 100,000 yen(1k). These same people go on 'Who wants to be a millionaire show in Japan to win money for themselves. Everything here is based on how much money you spend on something which determines your worth in Japanese society.

$240USD bucks ain't really a lot in Japan, where you'd shell out ~$6USD for a single cup o' joe, but I wouldn't pop $240 for a pair of jeans anywhere. No sir, no thanks. I'll stick with my Levi 501's (buy 2 or more, get 'em for about $32 a pair + tax from JCPenney.com). That leaves a whole lot of coffee money, and I don't mean the triple latte with soya from Starbucks. Just the brew of the day from my local Daily Grind, thank you very much. $1.15 and refills for .35 (all day). Anyway, I can't see how there's really much difference in the levels of materialism here (US) and Japan. Seems to me both cultures are entirely too focused on money and possessions.

That's an outrageous amount of money to pay for something that is not going to last a lifetime or probably won't even still be the style by the time fall comes around! It's too bad that sooo many people are buying into the fads that make the companies who made the jeans rich, rich, rich!!! Ugh... all in the name of vanity and popularity!!!

Theres no good enough reason why anyone should spend that significant amount of money on something so transient as a pair of jeans. ...it is sad and extremely materialistic...and sadly our society does this too i was watching on vh1 how angelina jolie's baby is getting a diamond encrusted pacifier--worth i dont kno how many millions--no one needs that just like you dont need 300$ pants.

Thats just Ludicrous. The most I spent was $197 on a Von Dutch last summer. It really hurts me that they are no longer in style.

That's stupid. If I lived in a country like that I'd save up enough money to move.
