It was "Short Circuit 2". While Fisher Stevens's character (Benjamin Javeri) appeared in both films, he was only a minor supporting role in the first "Short Circuit" movie, the plot of which primarily revolved around the robot (Number Five), Steve Guttenberg's character (Newton Crosby), and Ally Sheedy's character (Stephanie Speck).
It was the sequel in which Benjamin Javeri, was the main character along with the robot, renamed Johnny Five, and Michael McKean as Fred Ritter.
