I believe John Carradine held the record for actually having appeared in the most movies until his passing in 1988. He was in approximately 328 movies as well as television appearances. Mel Blanc would hold the title strictly for animation voice overs, with over 900 animation short subjects to his credit.

I'd say it was probably someone older than the one's mentioned so far--maybe members of the Barrymore Family (Ethel, Lionel, and ?). Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart were in loads of movies, as was John Wayne.
