You can snowboard anywhere for free, the ticket is getting there, having your own board and hiking up the mountain instead of using the lift... oh and having a place to stay while you're there. I drove up to West Virginia and paid $50 for a lift ticket and $60 in gas. I wrapped up in a sleeping bag and slept in my truck for two days and had a great time. $110 ain't half bad.
