Most of the above answers are only true in the US. In the other parts of the world that use cups/quarts/etc. (UK, Canada, Australia, etc.), there are 5 cups in a quart. So the answer in those countries would be 4 quarts = 1 gallon.

(Yes, in the British Commonwealth, there are still 8 oz in 1 cup ... but there are 20 oz in a pint, 40 oz in a quart, and 160 oz in a gallon.)

Assuming that the "cup" in question is actually a "cup" by liquid measure:

20 cups = 10 pints = 5 quarts

Um, I assume the cups are actually 1 standard cup in volume? If so, then there are 4 cups in a quart, and therefore your teacher is bringing five quarts.

there's 16 cups in a gallon, and 4 quarts. that means 4 cups per quart. since there are 4 left over cups, that's one more quart. therefore, 5 quarts.

How big are the cups? If they're Big Gulp size you'll barely fill one but not to the top.
