That's a great idea, and should look really nice. I might almost recommend going just glass OR tile, because the combination will be very heavy. Do you have a dremmel? That's going to make shaping the tiles much easier. As for the table itself, a large wire spool makes a great sitting table (about 2 feet high, and 3 feet diameter. Look up "Rigging" in your local phone book and ask if they have any empty spools. Usually they just get thrown away. Have fun!

I would get a table from a yard sale/flea market/thrift store and cut strips of wood to nail to the sides to lay the tile in. Make sure they cover the entire side and paint them to match the tile or stain them.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/AhPKz
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

DO IT JUST THE WAY YOU ARE THINKING OF AND PUT A COUPLE OF COATS OF POLYURETHANE OVER THE TOP OF IT. IT WILL SEAL THE WOOD AND THE TILES FROM THE ELEMENTS,JUST HAVE TO WIPE IT OFF. I WOULD RECOMMEND A CEDAR BASE TO FIGHT OFF INSECTS.DO NOT DO THE UNDERSIDE WITH THE POLY COAT SO IT CAN BREATH.YOU CAN GET A PLAN FOR THIS FROM THE FAMILY HANDYMAN MAGAZINE FOR AN INDOOR GAME TABLE TO FOLLOW.SHOULD BE AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY.
