Zionism is often misconstrued as Jews wanting to have a Jewish homeland in Israel. This is incorrect as all Jews (at least religious ones) have always striven for a Jewish homeland in Israel. Every religious Jew says it three times daily during prayer, and has for two thousand years.

The Zionistic movement, which originated in the late 1800's, is in favor of a Jewish homeland in Israel NOW, as opposed to after the coming of the messiah. While this was relatively controversial religiously when it first came out, it is pretty widely accepted religious doctrine among Jews nowadays (If for no other reason than the fact that the mission was accomplished).

After the formation of Israel, Zionism has come to mean simply supporting the Jewish state.
