Your standard Windows Media Player should be able to play that file. You could also use Divx (get the free Basic version at www.divx.com) or VLC media player at http://www.videolan.org/vlc if the others do not work.

If none of these options are able to play your file, then it's very possible your file may be corrupted (perhaps your file is not finished downloading and you're trying to play it? that's a no-no, you must wait for it to completely download).

The .avi is just a wrapper, just like .mov is the common wrapper for Quicktime, it could be mpeg2, h.264, etc. What program you use to play the file depends on the codec that was used to compress the file. Most of the .avi's on the net these days are Divx. This is because Divx produces great results at small file sizes. I recommend VLC Player, it is free and in my experience the best free player out there. It pretty much plays anything. If you use Windows Media Player and it does not play, don't assume it is corrupt, it usually means a codec was used that Windows Media Player does not recognize.

I'd stick with Windows Media Player as the newest version plays all formats of video. If not you can do a Yahoo search and find players that support the avi format or get the plugin for WMP for the avi format.

Hi,

You can try Winamp (www.winamp.com)
If Winamp does not work, then sure shot answer is to install the latest codecs. Let me give you the link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology=

On this page, under the "Select Download" option, choose the option "Codec Installation Package"

Also, note, that you need codecs from this link as well as codecs from divx website. www.divx.com. You can download the free player. But try the divx software after the above codec package does not solve your problem.

This shoudl resolve your problem 99.99%.

All the Best.

Cheers,
Manish

You probably don't have a codec package installed on the pc. Search for K-lite codec pack (or Ace Mega Codecs Pack or XP-Codec pack...) at the link below. I prefer the first one (it's small and it's perfect for viewing many movie files available now on the internet!

If it doesn't work with those, then it probably was encoded in a codec that your computer does not have. You have to find out what that codec is and download it. I use DivX for playing .avi's.
