Coyotes are Illinois cheif varmints. Farmers hate them, because they eat dogs, cats, chickens, sheep, goats, calfs, even a full grown cow or deer if they are hungry enough to band together. They absolutely will not attack humans. Coydogs, however, are an entirely different story. A coydog is a coyote mother who mates with a large farm dog. They are not common, but a close freind of mine shot one last year weighing 85 pounds. Normal coyotes wil NEVER get that big, and no, it wasn't just a stray dog. But even though coydogs don't really fear humans as rabidly as coyotes, I still don't believe they would attack a human under normal circumstances. They are smart enough to know that we are large and own guns. The only possible conditions under which (in my opinion) a human would be in danger is if a very small child, 4 or under, were left alone in a very remote place for a long time near a very hungry coydog or band of coyotes, near starving. And even then, I think they would wait for him to die first.

Here's an article all about coyotes: http://www.desertusa.com/june96/du_cycot.html
You say you live out in the country. You might be interested to know that in San Francisco, California -- just about as urban as you can get in the United States -- a coyote has been spotted in The Presidio, the national park that was formerly a military post in the northwest portion of the city: http://www.nps.gov/prsf/nathist1/wildlife/mammals/coyote.htm

The only good coyote is a dead coyote. They are mainly scavengers, but when they get about as big as a wolf that's when you have to start worrying about livestock.

As far as professional knowledge, sorry I don't have any, but I do have a suggestion. Don't forget your cats or dogs outside if you have them. If they wander off, they could be prey.
For any other information.
www.wikipedia.org and search coyote

They are fun to shoot. They are really not that violent. If they saw you during the day they would just run away. You could also just grab a call and a gun and call them in and shoot them for fun.
