Anyone who says Nowitzki is better doesn't pay attention to defense. Nowitzki is a terrible defender. Duncan is on a different level than Nowitzki. For every point Nowitzki scores, he is in turn scored on. That is not the case with Duncan.

Not to take away anything from Tim Duncan (who is one of the best players in the league), but I am going to pick Dirk Nowitzki. Although Dallas has not won a championship or have even made it the finals (unntil now), Dirk has kept them in the playoffs for more than two seasons. Not only that, he has transformed the team from virtually a nameless team to one of the best in the NBA (being playoff worthy time and time again). Also, Dirk is one of the best versatile players who are at 7 feet tall. He can shoot three's, foul shots, block shots... list goes on. Again, Tim Duncan is a great player, who deserved to win those MVP's, but Dirk is another player who also deserves an MVP and a championship.

As far as talent is concerned I think Dirk is better. Tim is highly effective though. Dirk has raw talent tho, he has range and is a much more well rounded player than Duncan. I mean let's be honest Duncan is fundamentally sound, but without the aid of the backboard how many shots would he actually hit? dirk is much better shooter and in my opinion an MVP caliber player.

What you are seeing in the playoffs is Dirk Nowitski making the step from superstar to ultramegastar.
He's 7 feet tall, and can hit a jump shot from anywhere, and is now flaunting a newfound willingness to drive hard to the hoop. He is edging close to being unguardable.
While Tim Duncan is a great player (and a very humble sportsman) with a very polished skillset, he is still a terrible free-throw shooter who has developed a tendency to whine like a baby to the referees. Dirk on the other hand is showing his edge, and is starting to look like he's going to be a marquee player in the near future.

Dirk Nowitzki. He is a much better 3 point shooter and has improved his inside game enough as of late to give him the edge over duncan.

I would have to say that Nowitzki is better. For one thing, he's the best perimeter big man in the game. Also, Duncan has a great team around him. He has Parker and Ginobli to play with him, which would make any player better. He also won one of those championships with Robinson playing with him. Up until this year, Nowitzki had no one to help him. Josh Howard is the person he needs to bet even better.

Tim is at the tail end of his career, but still is better than Dirk. Dirk is a more dominant player because the Mavs don't have any other great players like the Spurs do so he has more oppurtunity

I think Tim Duncan is the better player because of his championships and all the awards he has won.
