3x + 4 = x + 18

send all the x on one side and all the numbers on the other side

3x - x = 18 - 4

2x = 14

divide by 2 to get x on both sides

2x/2 = 14/2

2/2 x = 14/2

x = 7

ok if you have 3x + 4 = x + 18 you solve the problem like this:
-x -x
then the problem becomes 2x + 4 = 18 you then subtract 4 from each side - 4 - 4 then you get
2x = 14 you would then divide 2 from each side
2x/2 = 14/2 then the answer would calculate to become
x=7 because when you divide 2x by 2 you get x and when you divide 14 by 2 you get 7
