From the 2000 census:
Census 2000 showed that the United States population on April 1, 2000 was 281.4 million. Of the total, 36.4 million, or 12.9 percent, reported Black or African American. This number
includes 34.7 million people, or 12.3 percent, who reported only Black in addition to 1.8 million people, or 0.6 percent, who reported Black as well as one or more other races.
I'm sure the data on prison population is on the website linked below, somewhere. Here's what it had to say about % of male inmates:
At yearend 2004 there were 3,218 black male sentenced prison inmates per 100,000 black males in the United States, compared to 1,220 Hispanic male inmates per 100,000 Hispanic males and 463 white male inmates per 100,000 white males.

There are only about 12% blacks in the United States. This information comes from the US census. I don't know the percentage of blacks in prison but I know it's pretty high - well over 40% - in some states.

12.9% of the United States population is black. In a lot of sites that do ethnic percentages, it will say black because African-American is implying they came here recently from Africa.
The best statistics I could find for the percent of black prison inmates was this from 1997: "In 1997, 33.3% of state prison inmates were White, non-Hispanic; 46.5% were Black, non-Hispanic; 17.0% were Hispanic; and 3.2% were from other racial/ethnic groups."
This is a report from 2002 saying black males account for 45% of the inmates serving a sentence longer than a year: "–About 10 percent of all black men between 25 and 29 were incarcerated last year, compared with 1.2 percent of white men and 2.4 percent of Hispanic men. Overall, the 586,700 black men in prison outnumbered both the 436,800 white males and 235,000 Hispanic males. Black males account for about 45 percent of all inmates serving a sentence longer than a year."
