I have a female mini rex and I was just wondering if anyone else has trouble with them being stubborn. She is due to kindle a litter today and she has pulled fur and made a nice nest in her box but she is sure procrastinating. Last time she did everything right except she had them on the cage floor and they got hypothermia and died. Please let me know some of your experiences. Also she has red urine...its not blood she has already been checked by our local vet. How can I fix this or is it just something tired to the breed?

Just to let everyone know my doe had her babys overnight and they are doing fine. Thanks to everyone who left comments. I am a member of the ARBA and she doesn't have any infections as to the red urine. I was looking for anyone else who may have a similer sitituation. But thanks anyway.

Leave her alone. Rabbits instinctivly want to hide their babies even from their good human friends. Yeah crankyness is pretty normal for all expecting animals. LEAVE HER ALONE she'll be fine. Red urine? Dunno, wait till after the babies are born and walking around and see how she is.

I recommend contacting the ARBA with your health question. I know there is a disease in rabbits where they have red urine, but I don't have the books around and don't remember all the stuff about it. The have some expert rabbit veterinarians that work for them that specialize in rabbits. If anyone would know, they would. Also, you may want to check the kind of bedding you are using and the size of the nest box. Straw is usually the best thing to use as nestbox bedding. It has less of an odor than woodchips or hay. If the nestbox has too much of an odor the rabbit may scatter the litter outside the nestbox. She also migh scatter them if the nest box is too big. About 2" wider and 2" longer than the doe is when she is laying down is a good size for a nestbox. The doe is looking for a place to hide when she has them. If it's too big, she can't hide.

Hi -- We have mini rex and they can get very temperamental when getting ready to have babies. The typical gestation time is between 27-31 days although we had a doe deliver on day 33.

It is also common for first-time moms to have them on the wire the first time. Give her some privacy and she should do better this time.

The red urine is normal in some rabbits. As long as the vet checked it out and it is not blood, it is fine. The urine color may change after she delivers as well.

Probably a bladder infection. Keep a close eye on her for the babies & I would give her Injectable penicillian 1/10th cc per pound of body weight. It won't hurt her, but will clean out any infections she might have. Injectable antibiotics are always best for rabbits (used to be a breeder).
