Gargle with warm salt water. Then sip cups of hot lemon water with honey. The honey actually sticks and kills the bacteria. An Ears, Nose, Throat Surgeon said to not drink ice water or suck on ice chips because it can cause another problem.

I tried the gargle warm salt water thing, but it did not work for me. I found something different that worked for me this year. Take 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, and mix it with a glass of cold tap water. Gargle one mouthfull every hour for 24 hours swallowing the mixture afterwards instead of spitting it out. Rinse your mouth out afterwards with clean water to prevent the acid from the apple cider vinegar from eroding the enamel on your teeth. I found this remedy doing a yahoo search.

Depends why it hurts really. Soothing liquids include the syrup from fruit cans, honey and lemon, a little (just a little) alcohol and salt gargle. If you really don't like the medical approach, try a bit of steam as well as the liquids. Moist air is beneficial.
