It says one of my files is either deleted or corrupt.. So I did what it said and put the disk in and push 'r' (to recover it)

but now (after all that) it's asking me

"Which Windows installation would you like to log onto?"

and I have no clue what this means!
Can anybody please help me?

Its asking you to recover your system and do an installation instead. What file is corrupted?

This message is usually the result of a virus corrupting one or more of the core Windows files or a failed kernel mode driver install. This is too complicated a thing for someone who doesn't know what they're doing. You might be able to get the file recovered and Windows to boot, but unless you know what you're looking for, you won't know how to fix the root cause of the problem and it will likely return.

Take your computer to a repair shop with a good reputation and have them look at it. Many of them will listen to you explain the problem and then tell you the OS needs to be reinstalled and they will charge you from $50 to a couple hundred bucks. Some will listen to you, then look at it, then give you an educated answer about whether they can repair it, or the OS needs to be reinstalled.

If you do not have anything on there that's absolutely critical to keep, insert the original restore disc that came with it and go through the steps to restore it to factory settings. You'll lose your documents and email that are on the hard drive, but your computer will work like the day you bought it. You'll have to do some work to get your Internet working again and reinstall any applications you've bought or downloaded... but you've kept the discs or backed up the downloads and written down or printed off your serial numbers as you should have, right?

What it's asking you to do is use the Windows XP Recovery Console, which is sort of like a DOS command line, in order to repair your operating system. It's possible that you can replace the missing or corrupt file with a known good copy (or a backup located on your PC). This all depends on which file it is, if it's the ONLY file affected, & also if the problem was not caused by hardware failure.

it sounds to me like the old installation was never deleted before you did an install from the recovery disk. you get this massage as part of the boot up sequence i would imagine. put the recovery disk back in and don't push r. see if there is another choice to enable you to delete the previous installations of win xp. then re install xp and you should be good to go
