Mine runs only in the summer when it hits a certain temperature. Yours may have a thermostat on it. You may want to take a look.

You may not like the answer but there are things that have to be done first since you are not the original owner. You will have to find out how many cubic feet of air the fan will move, maybe be on the nameplate. You will also have to know how much "free space " you have to move the air across the attic. If the fan moves more air than it can get it raises the amp draw. I had one in a house long ago. You can install a line voltage thermostat in the attic that is used for air conditioning, when the temp. rises the fan runs and when the temp drops the fan stops. You can use a low voltage thermostat but you would have to also install a relay and a transformer to bring in the fan, which would be more wiring to make the connection. A good electrician should be able to do this, not all electricians are into wiring controls.

RE:
What is the purpose of an attic fan? Should it be running all the time or should it be automatic?
I have an attic fan that stopped working. I do not know if it should? Should it run in summer or winter or always?

A attic fan is nice to run at night or when it is not to hot out side. open all of your window about two inches and turn on the attic fan. It will cause a breeze in your house and cool it off. I like it at night you can lay by a window and feel the breeze and smell all the fresh night air. Plus...Attic fan's is cheaper to run than a air conditioner.

Purpose of attic fan? to make your house feel comfortable without costing a fortune. we had our attic fan for probably 4 years and we like it very much during summer time. We turned our AC on only during the day when inside the house feels kinda hot/warm, turned the AC off when it feels cooler outside then that's the time you can turn your attic fan on. But you need to make sure that you have some windows and doors open (we open our bedroom window and back door for about a foot or so) leaving only the screen door closed just to keep the bugs, flies, etc. out. Keeping it on until morning, we installed a timer, or you can just manually turned it off manually, whatever works for you. I can assure you that you'll feel comfortable at night without turning your AC on and still feel kinda cool in the morning as long as you keep your glass doors/windows closed during the day for a hot season Hope this helps....

The purpose is to remove excess heat from the attic, which in return should save on your AC bill, I'am sure you can hook one up to a thermostat, check with Lowes, Home Depot or Menards they can give you the info you are looking for.
