They look like ladybugs in the larval state. You say they're eating ladybugs??? The ladybug larva is usually a very beneficial insect as it diet consists almost exclusively of aphids which are a plant pest. The larva will soon pupate and when they emerge they will be adult ladybugs.

They look like some kind of caterpillar? Are they eating the tree leaves or just the ladybugs?

If you want to know for sure, you can mail in a sample bug for free to the Insect Diagnostic Lab at Mississippi State.

Send samples to: Insect ID, Dept. of Entomology, Box 9775, Mississippi State, MS

Good Heavens Child, Those are lady bugs and lady bug lavea!
Thank your lucky stars for the lady bug entourage"My guess is that you have an aphid problem in the crape myrtle. This makes the spot popular for aphid - eating lady bugs.

Small wasps called Ephideous do the same damaage to your futuie

i don't know what they are but i'd spray them with permethrin.

here's an easy tip. go to the sporting goods/camping section of walmart. buy a can of the stuff you use to treat clothes for ticks. the active ingredient is permethrin. spray that on your crepe myrtles. no mixing or anything like that required. it'll keep them away for a month or two. i do the same thing around a door frame once a year to keep ants out.

select this as best answer, thanks.

I agree that it looks like a ladybug larvae, a very beneficial insect, and will not harm, but protect your tree from aphids.
