3 ^ 1 = 3
3 ^ 2 = 9
3 ^ 3 = ...7
3 ^ 4 = ...1
3 ^ 5 = ...3, and the pattern repeats itself.

Therefore, a multiple of 4 will end in a 1.
2004 is a multiple of 4, thus will end in a 1
therefore 2003 ends in a 7

The answer is "7".

Check this out:

3 ^ 03 = 27 (ends in "27")
3 ^ 13 = 1594323 (ends in "23")
3 ^ 23 = 94143178827 (ends in "27")
3 ^ 33 = 5559060566555523 (ends in "23")
3 ^ 43 = 328256967394537077627 (ends in "27")
3 ^ 53 = ends in "23" - try it yourself!
3 ^ 63 = ends in "27"

By this pattern, 3 ^ 2003 will end in "27", or, to answer your question, the number "7".
