Too true it's true. I'll give you a subjective answer which is that I believe that the carbon rods may not be coming into contact with the gold plated contacts that complete the electrical circuit because of either wear or the ingress of dust or coffee, (whatever your poison that may have been spilt on the remote) that may be hindering the current flow. And, that by pressing harder I'll crush through the filth and get the last few drops of power out of the cells. I'd probably take the thing apart and clean the contacts, but being a remote user I'm averse to too much effort which is probably why the batteries got as flat as they did as I couldn't be bothered to get any from the supermarket. Or I was too idle to shift the uncomfortable thing from under my a** and flattened them that way. Finally there's sheer frustration and the totally illogical syndrome that finds me bashing my keyboard when I want to shout at the person the other end. At least you know you're not alone.

the same reasons we give the remote control a bash on the arm of the chair, twiddle the batteries, take them out and turn them round because we think that by some small miracle they will recharge themselves and we won't have to rummage around the kitchen draw for new ones only to find there's none in the house and you have to go out to buy them.

"We". Who is we? I certainly don't! Surely any techno normal person would change the batteries. Oh and Duracell Ultra are the ones to use for Remotes.

Well, we know it needs new batteries but are just too lazy to change them. We think we can somehow "squeeze" out a few more channel changes from it, and let the next poor bastard change them! Kinda like when you are running out of toothpaste.

I put it up to my chin and press the button. For some reason that always works.

PS - works with the car remote, too....why?

Actually, it may increase the conductivity of teh connection and allow enough power to trickle through. Sounds good, anyway.

Ignorance. I know as I do the same thing. It doesn't make it work, it just feels like you are doing everything possible to make it work..
