I power washed first then used Sherwin Williams paint
for aluminum siding . It has been on for 15 yrs. and still looks as good as the day I put it on. No peeling or blistering.

Power wash first, I used a good semi gloss latex exterior paint, used a roller closest I could find to the width of the siding, Keep a brush handy to go along underneath the over laps, turned out great and went pretty fast, single story home and detached garage were both painted and trimmed out in less than a week, but painted every day and moved around the house opposite the sun, depending on the color of the siding, if it is a light color hopefully you won't have to use a primer, I didn't
Good Luck

gee ive heard of painting simulated wood grain on some thing for the look but to paint aluminum siding that a new one for me...
seriously if you want to paint aluminum siding you must use an etching of some kind or an oxide paint or it will never stick, and spraying is the best way watch for wind conditions or your neighbors will have a fit and over spray is hard to remove... good luck and may the wind gods be in your favor, pressure wash first.

Hand wash using TSP (tri-sodium phosphate). It is sold in hardware stores. Use a brush or big sponge, to knock off any oxidized finish. Rinse with water. Latex paint works best. It is easiest to work with and cleans up much more easily.
For application, do what is easiest for you. I prefer a wide brush. You can paint the face quickly and paint the bottom edges without changing tools.
Sherwin Williams makes exterior super paint. They claim it will stick to anything, including vinyl siding.

Yes you want to power wash everything and prep any bad spots with good metal primer. Then coat everything with ICI 'prep and prime gripper multi-purpose' or similar primer. Then your color. Acrylic latex is probably the best as it applies easily, adheres well and dries quickly. I would suggest using an airless paint sprayer as the finish will be smoother than with a roller, but you have to beg borrow or rent the sprayer so you would have to decide about cost compared to quality. Hope that helps.
Good Luck

spray, definitely spray. i have painted 2 houses (for free) in the last 6 months. it was for friends and sort of a learning experience. an airless wagner power painter (80 bucks) works fine. they have a plastic tube you can use to suck the paint out of the 1 gallon can, and a small plastic container that holds paint under the gun.
POUR YOUR GALLON OF PAINT INTO AN EMPTY MILK JUG. FILL THE SMALL CONTAINER FROM THE MILK JUG. the gun works much better that way.
harbor freight sells knockoff paint guns for $25. a friend of mine has one and it works well for him.
also, a couple of my friends were starting to paint with brushes and rollers. i told them to use my sprayer. i left. i came back 60 minutes later and started painting with my sprayer. i did more in 5 minutes than they did in 65.
