They are one of the American Leagues 8 charter franchises and since approximately 1900 they have been named the New York Yankees prior to that they were the Highlanders as other people have said. They are the proud owners of the most World Series Championships with 26 in 39 Appearences. With 100 years in the Big Leagues that makes a world series appearence about once every 2.6 years.

The first name the Yankees played under was the Baltimore Orioles as one the charter members of the AL in 1901. They moved to New YOrk and began play as the Hilltoppers. Fifty years later the St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore and were renamed the Orioles.
