My dad used to take Gaviscon for acid reflux, it was the only one with little or no side effects and most hospitals in the uk will use this first. Dont know about the other things, tums certainly wont help much , cant speak for rolaids.

This book is probably the most informative and practical guide on the subject of acid reflux and heartburn that I have ever read https://tr.im/getridofreflux
I was prescribed Lansoprazole which was brilliant but after two years of aching joints, extreme muscle pain which the doc gave me cortisone jags for, with some research I discovered the drug Lansoprazole was causing these rare side effects but it was I who diagnosed it NOT my doctor, I came off the drug 2 months ago, changed my diet and discovered just eating an apple stops any acid reflux, I eat an apple before bed, brilliant no acid, any time I feel the slightest sign of reflux I simply eat an apple. Apple juice is not that good nor is anything else I have tried including honey at stopping reflux.

Acid inhibitors are dangerous drugs for a variety of reasons. They can cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies (acid is needed to free these vital nutrients from foods). They can cause intestinal dysbiosis (an imbalance of the microflora in the gut that can lead to chronic yeast infections, and all kinds of nasty gut and immune system problems). They can cause a 'leaky gut' that predisposes to many chronic and 'untreatable' conditions. And, these drugs do not fix the cause of the problem - they merely mask the symptoms.

These adverse drug reactions are well documented in the medical research literature. You can confirm the things I have noted by going to Pubmed and searching with terms like: acid inhibitors, adverse drug reactions, adverse events.

Dr. Sherry Rogers, M.D. has written a powerful book that explains the many causes of acid reflux and how to properly find and fix the underlying problems. The book is called: "No More Heartburn". It is available at Amazon.com and from the publisher at 1-800-846-6687.

If you have the intelligence and the motivation to learn about the real causes of acid reflux and would like to fix the cause and not mask the symptoms, then I highly recommend this book.

Best wishes and good luck.

If you want to have relief from your acid reflux, and not have to take any prescription meds at all. Just go to your local healthfood store and get "BRAGGS APPLE CIDER VINEGAR". Start by taking a couple tble spoons a day. Antacids are too often used for the wrong reason by many people. Antacids are used to negate the Stomach’s Hydrochloric Acid in the belief that excessive Hydrochloric Acid (Hyperchlorhydria) is the underlying cause of Heartburn. In fact insufficient production of Hydrochloric Acid (Hypochlorhydria) is a far more common underlying cause of Heartburn than excessive production of Hydrochloric Acid. In such cases the use of Pharmaceutical/Commercial Antacids is exacerbating the underlying cause of Heartburn (by further depleting Hydrochloric Acid).
What the "Braggs" will do is stimulate your body into producing more "H-ACID. Give it atry, I personally have seen this work for many, many people. And its only gonna cost you around 3-4 dollars.

I have a hiatal hernia (runs in my family) and get heartburn quite bad sometimes. My doctor prescribed Nexium. I've tried other prescription medicines and this is the best one yet. Over the counter medicines don't work for me. I find watching my diet by limiting my intake of caffeine and acidy foods helps also. If you're a bit overweight, lose some. Belly fat has been implicated in this condition. I've noticed that since I've put on some weight my heartburn is worse. When the weather cooperates, I'll be walking more to lose weight. Hope this helps.

I took Nexium for a number of years and it was pretty satisfactory. I did have a flareups occasionally. Recently my insurance made me try cheaper solutions. Previcid first and I didn't get along well with that. Next Aciphex, and that is working fine. I like it better than Nexium. Not as many flareups, and I can take it with or without food. Both Nexium and Aciphex are supposed to heal a damaged esophagus. Not sure about Previcid. Good Luck.

I know what you mean about prevacid I was on it for a least a year to help me with my acid reflux but it did not work for me, my doctor gave me sample of nexium and it work just great. So I have been on nexium for least four month now and they are great . Ask your doctor for the nexium i think they would work great for you also.I could not eat any thing until I start taking nexium the little purple pill (smile)

"Sue F" has a really great answer....I also have a friend that is into all natural everything....I have had acid reflux problems for yrs. even with the prescribed meds, there are days it is unbelievable how bad it is....my friend told me to drink dill pickle juice to begin with...I didn't believe her at all....but I was in such pain I thought seriously what could it hurt...except give me worse heart burn...I took 3 tablespoons of the dill pickle juice and I could not believe the difference.....totally amazed....I felt better within a couple of mins.....I have not tried the apple cider pills "Sue F" spoke about, but that would help immensely....if you are not able to take the perscribed meds....I just use the dill pickle juice periodically.....Also I would ask your doctor about the problems you are still having......I do agree not all prescribes meds work for everyone, and not all natural things work for everyone..... Good Luck.....Hope you feel better soon!!!!! ~Peace~
