Either the Beatles or Led Zeppelin - hands down, no arguments.
Pink Floyd is up there at the top too.
Everyone else just wants to be like those guys.
Aerosmith - Zeppelin wanna-be.
Rolling Stones - Beatles wanna-be.
Guns and Roses - Zeppelin wanna-be.
The Eagles - Beatles wanna-be.
The Doors? Metallica?
I mean, come on... what's next? If Def Lepard is the greatest band ever than Elton John is the greatest guitar player ever!

The stones. They are an american icon. They have more hits than ANYONE. Wild horses, Satisfaction, Respectable, Angie, Shattered, Some girls, and Start me up are just a few. They played at last years super bowl. Paul Mccartney did too and he's really good. Helter skelter rocks. Long live rock and roll!! Woohoo!!

tough question. if I had to choose I'd say the rolling stones back in the day. i saw them live 6 years ago and they were still amazing. and they were the major influence in a lot of other great rock n' roll bands (like aerosmith). and they gave people another option besides the beatles (i like the beatles, but the stones are more my speed).
